why did MaryAnne change?

Mary Anne Bell goes from being the girl next door to living in a cave in Vietnam armed and singing strange songs. She originally went to meet her boyfriend Mark Fossie but quickly outgrows him. She wants to shoot a gun, learn the language, and disappear into the depths of the jungle. Mary Ann has her own Heart of Darkness craziness going on here.
