When the author writes "Afterward they burned Than Khe," what is he telling us about the attitude of the soldiers toward the people in the villages around them?

The first casualty for the company is Ted Lavender, a soldier who is shot dead outside Than Khe. Burning villages were a matter of course and they were used to it. Lavender's death just gave them more cause to burn this village down.
