what is the the author's purpose by using this? why is the auother suing this/ and how does this affect the authors purpose?

Cross "humped" or carried a picture of Martha. The picture represents the world outside of war. Cross sees it as a foreign world, a metaphor of someone or something that is the feminine. He cannot have this world so he muses about the picture and what it represents.
