The Things They Carried

The Things They Carried

"It was a simple pebble, an ounce at most. Smooth to the touch, it was a milky white color with flecks of orange and violet, oval-shaped, like a miniature egg." page 7

what is the purpose of the author's use of this element? how does this element help the author convince his audience of his over arching idea?

can someone please help me in here

On the day that Lavender died, Jimmy received a good luck charm from Martha. It was a pebble found just when the sea touched the shore on a New Jersey beech. The pebbles represent the dichotomy of being separate yet together. That was his life: everything was separated from him but somehow together. The war, Martha, his friends, life, death...all were a confluence of random moments coming to form, like the pebble, his life.
