what is the meaning of the washing motion of the younger monk in chapter 11

We aren't really told what the washing motion means, in fact the men try to figure that out themselves to no avail. Possibly, when the monks bring water out for the men to use for bathing, the younger monk is telling them they might want to wash again...... ;-) just kidding. None-the-less, we aren't given a definitive answer as to the meaning.
