The Things They Carried

Sweeheart of the song Tra Bong

The paradox of love and war, the beautiful and grotesque, good and bad, etc. is shown throughout the novel in multiple chapters we read. Why do you think that Tim O’Brien, who disagrees with war and didn’t want to serve, would add elements of beauty and love amidst the tragedy, death, and turmoil of war? What effect does this have on the reader/what does it mean?
