At the end of "on the rainy river", the narrator says, I was a coward. I went to the war" what does he mean by this?

He means that he wasn't brave enough to walk away..... to dodge the draft. He wasn't brave enough to be called a coward or embarrass his family. He did the right thing, even though he didn't believe in it.
