Preface Question

Khadra begins with a preface describing the physical description of Kabul and the Afghan countryside. What is the purpose of such an opening? What kind of atmosphere is the reader introduced to?

The opening immediately sets the backdrop of the story, a setting that is desolate, empty, a place of battles and cemeteries..... a place barren of life. As readers, we are introduced to a world we cannot comprehend.... a world we find almost impossible to envision. The atmosphere is bleak, dark, and hopeless.
