How do people communicate to fail to communicate in this novel?

I think there is a lack of communication among Jake and his friends. Their gender identity seems to render them unable to communicate their torment to each other. The war becomes simply a superficial expression of humour repressing their inner turmoil or expressed in simplified terms.
