the prosecutor tries to prove that Meursault's crime was premeditated. His evidence is the facts of the crime and his criminal soul as shown through his actions toward his mother. The prosecutor says that Meursault's soul is empty of man's proper moral principles. Meursault asserts that he never intended to kill the Arab. He is flustered when asked why he did kill and finally says the sun. The room laughs.
