Ordinary a white Frenchman should not be standing trial for killing an Arab man. The French did not value the lives of Arab men. The court is angry with Meursault for rejecting the church, the court, remorse, and every other social convention that the French like to stand for. The jury cannot comprehend Meursault's existential indifference to his plight.
