Compare the relationship between Salamano and his dog to Meursault and his mother.

Meursault and Salamano have similar love/hate relationships.... Meursault with his mother, Salamano with his dog. Salamano is not the perfect master... he is abusive and neglectful, in the same way Meursault behaved toward his mother. After losing the dog, Salamano shows a more compassio. As a result, Salamano can understand Meursault's treatment of his mother, and even testifies for him at the trial.
