Throughout the novella, the theme of greed is explored along with others. The very use of the Agra Treasure as a possession being repetitively stolen during the entire course of the novella symbolizes the greed and the curses it brings upon the possessor.

Doyle presents the major as a selfish and ego-centric man who couldn't "bear to part" with the treasure due to the "mere feeling of possession". This suggests that the captain because of his overwhelming greed for wealth lacked empathy and care towards others and was concerned chiefly with himself.
