Who are Saknis and Attean, and how did they know where Matt lived and that he was in trouble?

Attean is an Indian boy around the same age as Matt. Saknis is his grandfather. They realize that Matt is unprepared for the long winter ahead and decide to him him. In return, Matt will teach Attean to read.
