Ship imagery
Images of ships and sailing elements are present throughout the novel. Parts of the ship are mentioned and described including the cabin, deck and ship's wheel, as well as buildings and areas associated with sailing which include Harbour's office, Officers' Home, port, etc.
Imagery of sea
Sea imagery is present throughout the plot; after all, most of the plot takes place at sea. Metaphors of the sea such as deputy of the sea being compared to Neptune and his pen compared to Neptune's trident are included. Comparisons of the sea to poisonous water are featured, as well as general descriptions of the vastness of sea.
Imagery of the colour white
The color white is prominent in the clothing of Arab people and sailing officials in general. Captain Giles is described by wearing a white tunic when the narrator first sees him. The narrator describes his walk to the Harbour's office, a part of which involves striding over the white stone and over white steps. Ships are mostly in the white color as well.
