The Selection Background

The Selection is a young adult fictional novel by Kiera Cass and was published by HarperTeen on April 24, 2012. The book is the first in a trilogy and due to its success has lead to a sequel.

The book focuses on protagonist America Singer, as she enters into 'The Selection', a process by which 24 girls compete for the Prince's affections. Through the process, America struggles to heal their broken kingdom which is being attacked by violent rebel troops, whilst also fighting her attraction to the Prince in order to maintain her love for Aspen.

When asked what inspired her during the development of the storyline, Cass stated that she thought about the differences between Esther and Cinderella which allowed her to develop the character of America.

It has been received highly by many reviewers, including MTV and Publisher's Weekly.

A movie series has been optioned by Warner Bro's, with Yael Grobglas playing the role of America.
