The Secret River

Considering William’s confrontation on the first night, how was the scene ironic?

Both men lay claim to land that they feel is theirs. William refuses to back down to the Aborigine's demand that he leave because he can not give up the only things he has left - his family and the chance to create a future for them. Both the Aborigine and William demand that the other 'be off.
