This reveals that Lily is naive about the way things are for black women and Rosaleen lives the injustice of bigotry regardless of the Civil Rights Act. When Lily mentions a black Virgin Mary staying in a hotel, Rosaleen explains,

 “Lily child, there ain’t gonna be any place that will take a colored woman. I don’t care if she’s the Virgin Mary, nobody’s letting her stay if she’s colored” (60).
