Lily assumes that all African Americans are like Rosaleen, her uneducated laborer friend-turned-housekeeper. Lily thinks blacks are uneducated and beneath whites. Lily’s interactions with the Boatwrights and the Daughters of Mary allow her to see some of the lines drawn between white and black. When Lily encounters the educated and articulate August Boatwright, she begins to change her views. Lily begins to realize her own prejudices about what she believed black people could or could not attain. Lily redefines her own identity using black women as role models.
