Lily knows that lying is wrong however she calls it a necessary evil when trying to live with an abusive man like T Ray. Lily feels badly lying to police so they would let Rosaleen go but again Lilly lives in an oppressive world run by whites. Telling lies enable Lilly and Rosaleen to navigate through a world where most everything seems stacked against them.
