As parents they were completely ineffective, as they did not raise Mary. Mary was left in the care of servants, and her mother only requested that they keep her as far away as possible. May was unloved, neglected, isolated, and ignored. Lacking in both affection and love, Mary doesn't know how to exhibit either. Left to her own devices, she becomes spoiled, selfish, and she runs the servants ragged. Mary is a cruel mistress, who is used to getting her own way.
