"A figure had emerged from Under one of the benches; with snake like, noiseless movements as it crept closer and closer to the two young men, not breathing, only gliding along the floor, and the inky blackness of the room."

I think the snake-like creature is a metaphor for Chauvelin's men hiding in the shadows of the room to intercept the two men standing by the fireplace.
