How did the Scarlet Pimpernel get past Bibot?

The Scarlet Pimpernel disguised himself as an old hag and escaped through the West Gate. He (she) told the guards a man suffering from the plague was sheltered in the back of the cart. Exposure to the plague was deadly, Bibot allowed him to pass without checking.
