There are many reasons for this. Pearl is Dimmesdale's child born out of sin. He fears what she represents to his soul and his position in the village. Pearl is also a wild child of nature. She runs, sings, garlands herself, and speaks her mind. She shoes little fear in a place where fear is entrenched in the people. Dimmesdale does not know how to react to her outgoing and frank personality.
