The Scarlet Letter

Why does the scarlet letter have an Hester "the effect of a spell, taking her out of the ordinary relations with humanity, and enclosing her in a sphere by herself"?

chapter 2, page 51

Suddenly Hester has become a person separated by her sin and the letter which represents that sin.  People will never look at her in the same way and will always see her in a different light.  Her "sphere" now contains only Hester and Pearl.
