It would seem that the narrator takes this job as a diversion to his Romantic fancies . He wants to use his intellect more but finds the job lacking any challenge of this sort. The narrator fears losing his losing his God given writing talent, he fears losing his creative intelligence if he stays at his dreary job at Custom House any longer.
