Why did Hester go see Governor Bellingham?

The Governor was threatening to take Pearl away because she refused to disclose the father. Pearl, a free spirit, was seen as something abnormal in the village. Puritans hated abnormal things. It was Dimmesdal's eloquent speech which convinces the Governor to let Hester keep Pearl.
