It was tough for a woman back in the 19th century. Sexuality was a sin, especially if you were a single woman. Adultery shamed a woman: a man, not so much. Hester had nothing to be ashamed of. It was the patriarchal double standard of men to treat female sexuality outside of marriage as a heinous crime against God.
