What three words does the A come to represent?

There are quite a few representations here. A, of course, can mean "adultery". Later it comes to mean "able" as Hester seems to validate herself through penance. A also means "alienation" at least to Hester. Many critics feel the A comes to mean "angel" in the way Hester conducts herself.
