What is the significance of Pearl’s reaction to the minister?

Pearl may be a young girl, but in her reaction (total rejection) we see that Pearl has no intention of sharing her mother. In one way or another she seems to understand that Dimmesdale isn't deserving, therefore she withholds her affection on the basis that somehow he must earn them.
