Although Pearl knew that she was supposed to answer that she was made by God having been properly instructed by Hester, she answers that she was made by a rose that Hester had plucked off the bush by the prison door. While roses can have many meanings, red roses often have the meaning of passionate love. Also, the reader sees the garden around the governor's mansion and the roses in the room. All of these tell us of the life of the governor.
