What does the Scarlet Letter mean to Pearl?

Pearl questions her mother but she does not readily answer. Pearl enjoys making up meanings for it. Pearl, however, is intuitive beyond her years. At one point Pearl interprets that the letter means the same reason why the minister holds his hand over his heart. She really isn't that far off!
