what does the crowd convey in terms of our anticipation of what is to come in the story?

The crowd is certainly interested when Hester comes out of prison. She is wearing her scarlet "A". People gossip and speculate about her young child, Pearl, and the mysterious father. This foreshadows the intense scrutiny and judgments that Hester will endure for the rest of the novel.
