Certainly many in the community replaced the meaning of her "A" from "adulterer" to "Able".THis however was only some people's perception. Hester had intact become colder and resigned. THrough years of hardship and innocent suffering, she had lost the passions and fire that made her such a lively soul. Through the "red-hot brand" of the letter, she had become “a bare and harsh outline”.
