The color red, in this case, is a symbol of guilt but certainly does not destroy anyone: it is just a color. Guilt causes a lot of suffering for both Dimmesdale and Hester. It can be argued that guilt destroys Dimmesdale. For much of the story Dimmesdale hides his guilt from the community. This eats away at his soul. Hester, however, wears her guilt with pride and humble patience. She transcends her guilt, even in the eyes of the villagers. They come to see her scarlet "A" as "able" instead of "adultery".
