To me the name Chillingworth has connotations of coldness and bitterness. These connotaions are consistent with his visit to Hester's jail cell when we learn that the only reason for his visit is to exact revenge upon the man who fathered a child with his wife. Hester is obviously not his reason for being there; his purpose is to exact revenge and deliver punishment.
