Hester goes to the Governor's house because she's heard rumors that Pearl is going to be taken away from her. She goes to meet with the Governor in order to prove that Pearl should stay with her, and that the rumors surrounding her daughter's strange behavior are exaggerated. With Dimmesdale's assistance, she makes her case, and ultimately, Pearl stays with her mother.
