Hester and Dimmesdale are the only two who know Pearl's parentage. The townspeople speculate about ridiculous rumours concerning the girl's background, including a belief that she is the incarnation of the Devil himself. Hester believes Pearl is the physical embodiment of her sin, but that through her she also gains retribution. Pearls name signifies her as something most precious...... probably the most significant presumption of all.
