mr wilson ask pearl "canst thou tell me, child, who made thee?" what is pearl answer?

Why did she say that?

She tells them that she had not been made at all but had been,

"Plucked by her mother off the bush of wild roses that grew by the prison door."

Pearl says this because she is a rebel (at three years old!) and doesn't want to give Mr. Wilson the satisfaction of a wholesome answer.
