Anti-transcendentalists believe that humanity man has the potential for both good and evil. Thus, true nature is unforgiving. Chillingworth blamed this inability to forgive on the fact that the events had not originated with him, but rather Hester and her adultery. He sees the ultimate outcome as destiny.
