How has dimmsdales secret sin affected his life?

Dimmesdale's guilt tortures him. Although he finally "mans up" and confesses, his guilt and creepy relationship with Chillingworth kills him. Still Dimmesdale lets Hester take all the blame and basically ruins her life while he hides behind his role as pious priest.
