This meeting between Dimmesdale and Chillingsworth is rather mundane and routine on the surface. They respectfully ask and answer each other's inquiries--even if Dimmesdale prefers not to take Chillingsworth's medicine. On another level, though, the two are distrustful of each other given the situation with Hester. Both seem to suspect that the other knows of Dimmesdale's iniquity.
