Hawthorne writes, “hereafter, that eternal alienation from the Good and the True, of which madness is perhaps the earthly type.” What is Hawthorne’s definition of insanity? Do you agree?

In this context, Hawthorne equates insanity with damnation. The second part of the answer calls for your opinion.
