Hawthorne gives Pearl the sense of the supernatural. She prefers a solitary life away from people. Pearl enjoys frolicking in the forest garlanded with flowers as if she was a forest nymph or sprite. Pearl had wild black eyes that seemed to dance as she did in the natural elements around her. It is this very elemental feel that Hawthorne gives to Pearl.
