Scarlet Letter is red symbolizing offence of a sexual nature.

Black Flower-In Chapter One of "The Scarlet Letter", Hawthorne describes the prison as the "black flower" of civilized society. THe irony being that this Puratin society is somehow utopian.

Pearl's letter is made of fresh green plants, to wear upon her own breast. This symbolizes the veryelemental and pure nature of her.
