The Scarlet Letter

Figuratively speaking, how might pearl have been plucked from the rosebush at the prison-door?

Maybe found in chapters 6-8.

In the novel, Ann Hutchinson is credited with creating the rosebush. In Pearl's eyes, she is a flower picked by her mother from the bush outside the prison. This would be similar to stories f the stork or the cabbage patch..... a story a child might be told when asked where babies come from, albeit, not the story the men were looking for when they asked her the question.
