A meteor streaks through the sky. Of course this sets off the Puritan superstition. Dimmesdale  interprets the shape to indicate that Heaven has mercy because of his intense guilt. The townspeople  the "A" to stand for "Angel" for Governor Winthrop entering Heaven.
