Do Pearl's potentially demonic origins detract her believability as a character?

I don't think so. The reader is well aware that the only darkness lies in the gross hypocrisy of these Puritans and, of course, Chillingworth. Hawthorne always describes Pearl with a joyous light amid a very grey social setting.
