The Scarlet Letter

At the end of the chapter, it is stated that the scarlet letter "had not done its office." What does that mean?

It means that she hasn't done her justice. The "A" is just took another name because she has done good.

I see that you've answered your own question. Did you have another question regarding The Scarlet Letter?

This means that Hester did not feel like she committed a crime like wearing the bright red A was suppose to do. She kept her child and did not even bother with the perpetuator.
