Hawthorne uses natural elements of power to describe Pearl. Pearl is pure energy and passion that, like a storm or whirlwind, cannot be controlled. She defies the narrow Puritan view of what a young girl should be like. Pearl is wild and organic: she is the living embodiment of Hester and Dimmesdale's passion.
